 Comparison of 5x5 to J!

Differences

Players:
  • 5x5 has 5 players for the entire game, J! has 3 players (can have less for final question)
  • Each player is attempting to signal vs double the number of opponents in 5x5 vs J!

Clues:
  • Players provide answers in 5x5, players provide questions in J!
  • Players must select clues top to bottom in each category of 5x5, while in J! they can select any clue position.
  • The 5x5 final has five correct answers, the J! final has one correct question

Values:
  • 5x5 player scores start with 5000 points, J! scores start with $0
  • 5x5 player scores can never go negative, J! scores can go negative
  • All 5x5 players participate in the 5 by Final, J! players with negative scores cannot participate in the final question.

Multipliers:
  • Each player in 5x5 has an opportunity for a DoubleUp, and can multiply their score by up to 5 times in the 5 by Final.  Only certain players who reveal Daily Doubles can multiply their score in the regular J! rounds, and players can at maximum double their score with the final question.
  • The player selecting a 5x5 DoubleUp gets to see the question before deciding whether to answer, where in J! the player makes a wager then sees the question.
  • If the player decides not to ring in to answer on a DoubleUp, it is released to the other players to attempt at a value of 5000.  In J! other players do not get a chance at the Daily Double clue.
  • In 5x5 DoubleUps are in a fixed position in the last row, In J! Daily Doubles are placed somewhat at random (rarely in the first row)

5x5 was developed by Bill Schantz in 2012
J! was developed by Merv Griffin in 1963
